Narendra Modi, our Prime Minister, has launched a new initiative called the PM SHRI Scheme to revamp old schools and improve education for kids. This announcement was made on Teachers’ Day, September 5, 2022, via a tweet from the Prime Minister.

PM Shri Yojana
The PM Shri Scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is set to upgrade 14,500 old schools across India. These schools will see a modern and holistic transformation, with a focus on technology, smart classes, sports, and improved infrastructure.
The scheme aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) and aims to benefit millions of students. Additionally, at least one PM Shri School will be established in every block, and each district will have one secondary and senior secondary school connected to this initiative for wider accessibility.
What is PM Shri Yojana?
On July 29, 2023, PM Narendra Modi launched the All India Education Samagam 2023 at Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan. This event marks the third anniversary of the New Education Policy (NEP 2020) and lasts for two days.
During the event, PM Modi thanked dedicated intellectuals who have advanced the NEP’s mission. He also released over Rs 630 crore as the first installment of funding for 6207 schools under the PM Shri Scheme (PM School for Rising India), emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving education.
How will the School be Chosen?
The PM Shri scheme aims to transform 14,597 schools into model schools through a three-step process. Schools will compete for selection, with a maximum of two schools per block (one primary and one secondary/senior secondary) eligible. Geo-tagging will help monitor these schools.
Eligible schools include Primary (Classes 1-5/5-8) and Secondary/Senior Secondary (Classes 1-10/10-12/6-10/6-12) with local self-UDISE+ codes under State/Union Territory Governments or Union Territories. The selection process will follow a clear timeline in three stages.
Phase 1: States/UTs agreed to fully implement the new education policy by signing a Memorandum of Understanding. The Center pledged to support these schools in achieving quality assurance through PM Sri Schools.
Phase 2: Here, we’ll identify eligible schools for PM Sri Schools based on specific minimum criteria using UDISE+ data. This data-driven approach ensures that the schools selected meet the requirements for participating in the PM Sri Scheme.
Stage 3: This step uses a challenge-based approach to meet specific requirements. Only schools that meet the challenge criteria from the previously identified eligible schools will move forward.
States, Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs), Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs), and other relevant bodies will conduct on-site checks to confirm compliance with the required conditions. This thorough verification process guarantees that chosen schools meet the standards for participating in the PM Sri Scheme.
There will be four opportunities for you to apply each year.
For the application process, schools will use the online platform. In the first two years, this portal will be available quarterly, meaning four times a year, with access every three months.
To make sure the information is accurate, the State, Union Territory (UT), Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVS), and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV) will thoroughly verify the claims made by the schools.
Once this verification is done, they’ll create a list of the chosen schools and send it to the Ministry, completing the selection process for the PM Sri Scheme.

The PM Shri program would improve 1753 Schools in Uttar Pradesh.
Under the PM Shri (Prime Minister’s School for Rising India) initiative, the Central Government is set to elevate 1753 schools in Uttar Pradesh to a higher standard.
These schools will undergo improvements, incorporating essential facilities such as computer labs, playgrounds, skill labs, libraries, smart classrooms, and various student amenities. The primary aim of the federal government is to enhance the quality of both elementary and secondary education.
The PM Shri Scheme will be implemented in 1664 primary education and 89 secondary schools. The objective is to revamp these schools to enable the delivery of smart education for students. The PM Shri Schools in Uttar Pradesh will serve as a model showcasing the best educational practices and policies.
Maharashtra’s 846 schools will open as part of the PM Shri program.
As per Eknath Shinde, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, a total of 846 schools within the state will undergo a transformation to become premier educational institutions, providing high-quality instruction.
This transformation is part of the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India initiative, and it was formally agreed upon by both the federal and state governments on February 14. In the first phase of the PM Sri program, over 1500 schools will be established across India, with Maharashtra contributing 846 of these schools.
PM-SRI plan approved at a cost of Rs 27,360 crore.
Exciting times in school! Big investments are coming to make schools better. This will not only help local and state schools but also schools in union territories and the government. Over 18 lakh kids will directly benefit from this.
The Union Cabinet has given the green light to a PM-SRI project, which means they’re setting aside a whopping Rs. 27,360 crore to upgrade 14,500 schools in five years. From this, Rs. 18,128 crore will come from the government. Of this, 40% will go to school committees and headmasters, and another 40% will directly help the schools.
To be more eco-friendly, schools will use green products and practices. They’ll also learn about taking care of the environment.
Schools can apply online through the program’s website. The selection process has three steps, and states and union territories will fully embrace the National Education Policy (NEP). The government is there to make sure schools provide quality education.
