If you only want a one-word response, we would say, “Yes, visiting Kashmir is very safe.” But we’ve always thought that’safety’ is relative to each individual. Every time we visit a new city or location, we try to learn as much as we can about it. We also frequently spend the first several days in well-known areas. And we constantly seek out local assistance. For our lengthy trips, we often adhere to this norm, and Kashmir was no exception.

Kashmir is one of the most pristine and beautiful states of India which is located on its northern side. Kashmir offers varied varieties of activities and exploration that can be done such as trekking, mountaineering, rock climbing, camping, skiing, and paragliding.

Kashmir is a politically sensitive location, there is no doubt about it. As we planned our 9 days trip to Kashmir with family and kids, there were several apprehensions in our mind. There was a bomb blast in one of the main markets and a few targeted killings few days before we visited here. And then just a day before our trip there was a blast in the parking of Tulip Gardens of Srinagar , where we very much had plans to visit.

To be honest, at times, we even wondered if we should shift the dates of our travel or cancel our trip altogether. But finally we took the plunge. And, here we are. Back to our home all safe and sound. Ready to share our experience with you. And help you decide how safe is it to visit Kashmir or how safe is Srinagar to travel.

The local people of Kashmir

The people of Kashmir were among the friendliest, most welcoming, and most supportive. They are quite kind to tourists. In fact, they work hard to promote travel to their area. In essence, they are just like you and I. It is only natural that periodically the political turbulence and the delicate climate annoy and agitate them. However, they are tough people. They won’t let you know how they are hurt or annoyed. Everything people do, say, and talk about in Kashmir makes you feel comfortable and at home.

The cab driver who had been with us the entire time called to check on us even after we got home. the next time we see him, he wants to take us around his house and introduce us to his family. We have explored India extensively. and hired cabs for those trips. Just as on our trip to Meghalaya, our cab driver was with us for four full days. Once we reached Palampur, the same cab driver was assigned to us for our trips to Shimla and Manali.

In total, during the course of the two trips, we were with him for close to 15 days. There are also a ton of more examples. But this is the first and only time we have ever seen our cab driver make a gesture like this.

Is Srinagar safe to Visit

Srinagar serves as the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. As a result, it is one of the most vulnerable locations. You therefore notice a significant army presence as soon as you arrive here. Additionally, there are CRPF members stationed every few yards along each street. Army and CRPF caravans routinely pass on Kashmir’s roadways as you drive. Rest assured, though, that despite everything, life goes on as usual. We noticed nothing peculiar, and nothing unexpected happened.

We ate dinner early as well, and we were back at the hotel by no later than 8:30. We used to receive calls from the hotel reception in each of the rooms at around 9:30 night assuring us that the guests had returned safely. They then used to shut and lock their main gate at roughly 10:00 p.m.

We avoided uncomfortable topics with the locals. We were also cognizant of and respectful of their culture, as well as each individual’s point of view on issues. After all, everyone has the right to express themselves freely.

A bomb exploded in one of the main market areas a week before we arrived in Srinagar. So, when shopping, we avoided the main market locations. And largely stayed in the safer confines of Dal Lake.
